Hi,
Could someone please inform me of the best way to run Tyrian 2000 on my power mac G5. It is a Mac, yes, and I hate not being able to have my favourite games to play...but with 8Gigs of RAM i need it for my Graphic design!
Please give me some ideas.
Cheers.

Although it might be a bit slow, DOSBox runs on OS X. Other than that, I don't know.

Um... That relates? Anyway, I hear Powerbook has Bootcamp to help out, and maybe G5 can dual-boot. Try dual-booting with Windows, and then install DOSbox.

Thanks lads,
Did try the whole DosBox get-up but didn't want to fart around too much. Just thought that this popular arcade game may have been recreated at some point for the Mac.
Thanks again, El.

There's a slight issue with that, Windows only runs on x86 computers, and DOSBox only runs in dynamic core mode on x86 computers. You hearing about Powerbook having Bootcamp is also wrong, Bootcamp also only runs on x86 computers, which a PowerBook isn't. The x86 Mac laptops are called MacBooks. Best option is to run it with normal core in DOSBox, which has a Mac OS X version, it'll be slow as hell though.

I run in it DOSBox. Works fine on low detail. Kinda sad that the emulation speed is that bad - I could run it much faster using VirutalPC, but didn't care to keep paying for updates and it was glitchy with the music's drum track.

Darn - Really sucks, ay? Well... You don't have any other machines in your house? Buying one, however cheap it may be, might not be smart if it's for a conquest of playing Tyrian xD But the game's really nice, and it would be great to see an emulator pop up for Mac OS's, if not the game itself (though no one probably wants to rework it). Sorry, I have no experience with a Mac (except for the hilarious mouse), so I have no idea what to change in the game itself.

Darn - Really sucks, ay? Well... You don't have any other machines in your house? I do have a PC laptop which I rarely use. My main machine is a Mac, so I prefer to play my games there, too. DOSBox runs it decently enough, and it's not like Tyrian loses too much to be enjoyable on low detail (I bet it could do higher, except they all enable the transparency effect which is the real killer). It plays fast enough, I get sound and music, and it's free, so I'm happy enough. It's just a shame that I've seen a different emulator (VirtualPC) get far superior performance but with other problems (botched drums, no sound, price, no longer being sold.) Now, if DOSBox were to somehow become multithreaded, I could get 4x the performance...

Macs run DOSBox decently? My friend had a high-end system but still said it ran averagely even on standard quality (albeit 'High' instead of Pentium) and all. Does the standalone without DOSBox run very fast? Problem is sound and graphics... Tyrian works without an emu, yeah, but there's no sound and graphics may have problems (though performance is exceptionally well and all because emu's don't have to process it at the same time), and if there were a simple way to do it... I hear that there's something for Mac that, like Windows, can adjust the settings for older programs. Fortunately, it actually works, unlike Windows (compatibility wizard) which does little/NOTHING and is a waste of space, etc. Better yet, it's free. I'm searching for it now, but I have no idea if it works, me being a Windows user to the end (unless there's something after Vista, then I quit!) and having no clue about Macs (other than their spiffy interface and non-cluttered engine like OSX Tiger)... So, hopefully I can find it and give you a link. I'm pretty confident that Macs can run standard executable installers...

Um, I'm not sure what you're confused about, nor am I quite sure what you're talking about...

Tyrian without emu's runs deviously fast but without sound/good graphics (on some machines). My friend's Mac runs it slowly, though it's really good, on normal quality ingame. There's a program that tinkers with games to make them run on Macs, searching for it and preparing to send once I find the installer.
Chopped up English. XD

I don't think shawn knows what he's talking about either

Actually I do, it's a matter of interpreting and reading a bit slower.

There's only one reasonable way to run DOS executables (which all versions of Tyrian are) in Mac OS X and that's via DOSBox.
They do not run natively, they do not run with WINE, there's no program that can make them run in Mac OS X (Mac OS X's backwards compability is for OS 9).
I still think it sounds like you have little idea what you're talking about.
