So I'm a newbie dev working on a re-envision of the classic Descent (we're not using the name because Interplay was an ass and C&D'd us...it's a much longer story) called Sol Contingency. We're gonna release a demo soon and have our Kickstarter at the same time then go into full development using Unreal Engine 4. Why am I tell you this? I've been thinking about what I'm gonna do after SolC (assuming I'm not too busy IRL) and I have a dream to make a Tyrian remake or reimagining. Do you guys know who owns the IP for Tyrian? I would assume Epic since they published, but I'm not 100% sure. We assumed that Interplay owned all the IP for Descent, but apparently they don't and there's some weird stuff about Parallax/Outrage/Volition possibly having the rights of things like ships? It's all weird. If it's Epic, and only Epic, then, easy, I know who to talk to. If it's more complicated, anyone care to let me know? This will probably be in a couples years or so depending on how long SolC takes and whether I find people who are also interested in making this a reality (I would love it if my own team in SolC would help out). This is just speculation though. A dream I hope to someday make a reality

You'd want to talk to Jason Emery -- one way of contacting him is though the Tyrian Forever Facebook group.

Sweet! Didn't expect such a quick reply! I was worried that this forum had died out! Thanks a lot!

I occasionally pay attention, but as you can imagine I'm always tugged in many different directions. Or off unplugged on some all day bicycle ride to avoid work.

Well things IRL got hectic so I probably won't be able to do much. If anything does come up, I'd be down for level design. I think UE4 could be the engine of choice for this as it natively supports different game types (top down, fps, 3rd person, etc). At any rate, just follow Tyrian Forever on FB. If someone makes a good kickstarter, I'm in. If anyone wants a semi-noobie mapper, I'm here.

Otherwise, if you'd like it to be more 3D, this would be a perfect choice, and I'd be happy to help.

Yeah, I'd rather have 3D models that pay excessive fan service to the original sprites. I was actually daydreaming today about how I personally would want the new Tyrian to be and what features I'd love. Customizable ships is one of those things allowing you to make changes to the different parts of the ship, even allowing for asymmetrical wings. To be a true sequel to the original, I'd like to see something innovative, like a layered field (you're moving forward, but some ships may be above you and you need to move to their level to kill them before they shoot/ram you) or the ability to turn your field of view to the side or backwards to adjust to the direction enemies are coming. I personally would like the Stalker to be the default ship, ergo the weakest, but also the most customizable so that by the end of the game, it could be the most versatile ship you have. Dodging in-game would be a cool feature as well as a possible turret that you can aim with your mouse (you control flying the ship separately than the mouse, either via joystick or keyboard). Mega-abilities that are more flashy than the original ones would be cool. Imagine being swarmed then super charging your Zica Laser and plowing down everything? Just some thoughts XD lol

I'm not sure about that... it would almost feel like an entirely different game if that was necessary. That's one of the things I love about Tyrian: the gameplay simple and sweet, and yet it has so many possibilities for variation in worlds, player ships, weapons, and enemies. If a whole new element were to be added to the gameplay, then it might take away that charm. But I like your ideas about customization and mega-abilities. One possibility that incorporates your ideas to some extent would be to include some specific levels that are in 3rd-person 3D view instead of top-down. This would allow for some new gameplay (including change of viewpoint), but there would still be levels where the original gameplay remains unchanged. Then again, it is your idea, so don't feel like you need to modify it based on my feedback.
