hi to everyone if you are here on the Tyrian forum, you should probably know 2 games called Raptor and Demonstar. They have been both developed by Scott Host many many years ago, first as ApogeeSoftware/3dRealms, then as his company called Mountain king Studios. you should probably read on wikipedia to know something more of the games we are talking about: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mountain_King_Studiosyeah they are pretty old (average: 10 years) and they have lot in commons with Tyrian: 2d, upgradable ship, different worlds. And yes, THEY ARE NOT FREEWARE NOR OPENSORUCE: he is selling them at more than 15$ and in my opinion they are expensive for what they offers (the xp/vista/seven support is good, but the games are damn old!) I've sent to the developers an email asking something on the past and the future game, and if they will ever release the source code of their early games. after 1 week i've not received any reply. What do you think about these games?

Been playing Raptor since before I discovered Tyrian, though I believe Tyrian is far superior. Demonstar is like Raptor in space, but a tad more subdued. It's not bad, but I prefer Raptor to it. Still, a worthwhile shmup for PC once you've exhausted other possibilities.

I haven't actually played Demonstar before (heh, sounds like I really should grab a copy though), but I definitely know Raptor. Like Metalfro, I became familiar with the game some good time before I found out about Tyrian (at least a year or so, IIRC).
I have to admit that although I do find Tyrian more attractive and a better play overall, one thing that I've always appreciated about Raptor is its adherance to a more "real-world" setting. Combined with a grueling difficulty curve, which I personally found even more difficult than Tyrian's, it could really stand its own against Tyrian if it had but perhaps a few more available weapons and perhaps a bit more arcade feel to it. I still love both games though.
