Hello everyone! I've been working on this since March, i know there are many ports of OpenTyrian, but none for the "cheap" phones as far as i know. I wanted to make a game, and since i love Tyrian i decided to do a remake. I had fun making it this far, i hope you will enjoy it too! This is a somewhat simplified version of the original game, but it still feels like Tyrian. There is only one level at the moment, and there's no shop yet. Some screenshots: You can download it from: kecske85.valodi.hu/TyrianDEMO.jarIt should run on anything with MIDP 2.0. EDIT: a display with 240x320 resolution is also required. Upload it to your phone via Bluetooth or data cable, OR you can try it with an emulator. Here is a link for one: webstart.mpowerplayer.com/index.jnlpThis is also made in Java so you need to have it installed to run this. I'm looking forward to your feedbacks!

Neat! For a while, I couldn't tell if it was a remake or a port with modifications. (Though if I had read the description thoroughly I would have known.)

I guess thats a compliment, thank you! The engine was made from scratch, i played a lot of Tyrian on Dosbox for reference. Since phone hardware is pretty weak, i had to do a few changes e.g.: -levels are as wide as the screen -only 2 layers since the third was only for decoration(as far i know) -explosions are a bit different -edited some of the graphics(e.g.: the "claws" of the boss ) I aim to get as close to the original as possible within Java ME-s boundaries. The first victim is SFX , but i think we can live with that. It would be nice if people could try this on their phones and give some feedback about performance and any errors they might encounter, as i don't have access to many phones to test on. Oh, about performance: there might be some lag during garbage collection (when the memory is cleaned). This pretty much happens when a new game is started, as a lot of graphics are loaded. On my nokia s40 series phone the garbage collector gets used to the heavy load of the game after a while and adapts, dunno about other phones.

I edited the original post, maybe this way i'll get more feedback. Right now i'm working on the shop, it's quite a challange to stuff everything on the narrow screen, item images probably won't be used(the texts are actually wider on the phone). Heres a peek: ( Note: that's not final, just an alpha version )

It says that the app isn't compatible in my N95-3 ...I got a SDL port anyway, but the more stuff I can mess with, the better ;D

Okay looks like i found the problem. The requirements were too high so i fixed that. I updated the demo.jar, the same link in post #1 points to the fixed .jar now. Should run on any MIDP 2.0 phone.

Congratulations kecske85, this is impressive. Unluckly, my cell is so entrylevel I don't even think it has Java support.

Thanks maxdz8!
I too had a really old phone untill march, when i bought a new one with all the modern features. It's actually the reason why i started making this remake.

Thanks Grezzo! I have some bad news for you though: -Your phone isn't exactly one of the lower-middle class phones im targetting, so with that huge resolution of yours things might look silly. - I haven't implemented touch screen input yet(i consider those a luxury). I guess i could do that in a hour or so, but i have no idea how that should work. I hope you can "enlighten" me.
Also i wouldn't dare to think this can get anywhere near as good as the official port.(Unless they screwed it up, but i doubt that)

kecske85hi and thank you for you precious details. i haven't tried yet and now, after your "news", i'm not so sure to try the game. Anyway i haven't any programming skill at the level needed by the target (touch support) but i think you have to focus on accelerometers (i mean the things used by te phone to turn the screen if i turn the entire phone). thanks for your efforts!

Hi Grezzo!
The project is currently on hold as i have many exams coming up. The shop is done, and i want to add atleast one more level to the next demo. Maybe i'll get it done by next week. Anyways, glad to hear you are still interested in this.
