Well, sort of. I've been working on the Starforce mod for FreeSpace 2 for around two years, which is based on an interpretation of Tyrian that has been evolving for around 10 years. The Starforce mod is built on FreeSpace 2, a 3D starfighter combat sim. The Starforce mod will have many elements, weapons, ships, etc. reminiscent of Tyrian, but in other ways it is quite different. You will get to fly the Talon from Tyrian, fire pulse cannons, vulcan cannons, Protrons, mini-missiles, etc., face down deadly Microsol starfighters, and fight in deep space, dark matter clouds that obstruct sensors, and, if I can find a suitable skybox, a planetary atmosphere.
This mod was mentioned long ago on the old forums in the "Remake suggestions, and after two restarts, it is ten times what it used to be.
Features of Starforce:
-Over 60 ships and vessels, including iconic Tyrian spacecraft such as the Talon, Phoenix, and Stalker.
-An arsenal of powerful weapons, including pulse cannons, vulcan cannons, shotgun-like Protrons, lasers, particle beams, missiles, torpedoes, and more.
-Massive capital ships, some of them several kilometers long, bristling with devastating pulse turrets, missile batteries, and beam cannons.
-True 3D gameplay
-20 fast-paced missions that cast you in the role of a pilot fighting for the Savaran Imperial Alliance against the Microsol Consortium and its satellite state the Republic of Erigone.
-Fighters have unique statistics and behavior--light fighters handle better and are faster than heavy fighters, but have less armor and weaponry.
-Five factions, each with unique ships and weaponry.
-Fight alongside friendly forces, command wings of fighters, and escort freighters and capital ships through enemy territory.
-A dramatic, epic soundtrack that changes dynamically--the music will become more intense during frantic combat, and quiet down during lulls in the fighting
-Appearances of Tyrian characters such as Transon Lohk, Trent Hawkins, and Vykromod, but not quite the way you remembered them.
-Advanced graphics, including hardware transformation and lighting, 32-bit effects, specular and environment mapping, and weapon effects you must see to believe
And now for screenshots:
This is a Savaran dreadnought. If you were to line 100 Talon fighters up nose to tail, the line would be around 2/3 the length of this ship. It's that big.
The Protron is more or less faithful to the original weapon from Tyrian.
Are you afraid of the dark? If not, fighting in a dark matter cloud will probably correct that.
Unlike in Tyrian, you will fight alongside allies, and sometimes even have to protect allied ships.
The MCF Stalker-B is the Microsol Consortium's primary fighter class, and is a formidable opponent.
A beam cannon being fired by a capital ship (the capship itself is hidden in the dark matter). You do not want to be hit by a beam cannon. You really, really do not want to be hit by a beam cannon.
Torpedo bombers give pilots the firepower needed to take down those big capital ships, but a light fighter will run circles around them.
