Anyone wanting to get tyrian on their ipod or iphone? I love my itouch, and I love playing my super nintendo emulators. But I've really been thinking about how killer it would be to play tyrian on it. I've been considering taking a crash course in programming to create it myself, but I don't think I have the brainpower. Anyone have any insight on the issue?

mmh you should look to the COCOATyrian because, if i don't commit a mistake, on iphone there is a MacOS.
about the BB bold i will be more difficult due to the "closed" nature of the software.
Maybe for the Palm WEBOS (fully with java and php) it will easier

You'll have to adapt most of CocoaTyrian as the iPhone doesn't have a 16" screen, physical QWERTY, and half the power of a MacBook. Plus, you'll need to figure out an interesting way of maneuvering, since holding your thumb over your ship ruins gameplay; you could use the gyrosensors to control the game by tilting your iPhone, but from what I've mucked around with on XCode, having that as a stable function is rather difficult, as you'd have to have a default orientation to not lay out your iPhone like a table and be careful with hypersensitive movement.

CocoaTyrian has been merged into OpenTyrian some time ago, just look in the Classic svn-tree. I don't have an iPhone so I couldn't test. But if I remember correctly the SDL port for it makes use of the accelerometers as a joystick so the support for them would come for free (if you could compile it ).

I am 90% done with iPhone port of the classic branch. (you tube has a video of my early build from a month ago, running on iphone) I am planning to submit it to app store in a week or 2 from now. Of course, since it's GPL I'll make the source available to whoever needs it.. Below are some screen captures to give you an idea of how it is going to look.. The ship is navigated by touching/moving a finger to corresponding position on the screen as accelerometer controls seem to be too annoying... Update: here is the youtube video:

Nice work, I'm surprised you managed to coach the current graphics code into doing those nice iPhone graphics. Or is that an overlay over the game output?

yuriks: Thanks... Basically, yes, its an overlay.. All original graphics sits in one UIView and other stuff sits on top of it... Also, since some people were not thrilled with having d-pad for menus - I am redoing them as touch-menus.. Will keep you posted bb1: just get an iTouch 2G - it's 30% faster and cheaper ;-)
