When I start the game, the ship instantly flies to the upper left corner and stays there. It can still fire and if I mash on the right arrow key it rolls to the right but otherwise doesn't move. In the menus, the left direction is still being selected which makes exiting the game very interesting. It rapidly scrolls between OK and CANCEL.
I just compiled opentyrian on Ubuntu 7.10 and got an executable using make. I did not run make install yet because I've encountered a problem.
To test it, I ran the game, and tried changing the controls under options. With some difficulty I got the Left input to map to the right arrow key and the other directions on some letters. It didn't make any difference. The ship still zooms to the upper left corner and stays there. I really need some help here. Do I need to recompile? Has anyone else encountered this problem?

try running tyrian with the 'nojoy' parameter, often this is the result of a mis-detected joystick

At the risk of sounding like an idiot, how does one load OpenTyrian with the 'nojoy' parameter? I've also encountered this problem.
