Hi,
Although i've read that Tyrian's original sourcecode (written in pascal?) isn't distributable, i would still ask for it. I was coding in pascal for a while then i started delphi, so not a big change. I'm writing for fun a similar up-scrolling game, and some programming realizations of certain ideas would help me a lot i guess. So, i would like to ask for the sourcecode if it's written in pascal (is it? I remember reading something like that), just fore pure learning... (i don't know any C languages to program unfortunately)

i suggest setting the forum up so that only members can post to it.
proboards is pretty resilient against spam bots.

you guys are doing more than just open scource right? I mean, I'm kinda expecting a remake with the same (maybe some new) graphics

It technically IS a source remake. But it won't have improved GFX until we completely finish porting it.

You're making progress pretty fast O.o First time I tried this I got a non-interactive title screen and a month later it was interactive I'd prefer a BSD-ish license so this could be used as a base for fanmade propietary works. moiRenard: because it's free software you can fetch the source and try it freely, you don't need to ask for a permission =)

I'm writing for fun a similar up-scrolling game, and some programming realizations of certain ideas would help me a lot i guess. So, i would like to ask for the sourcecode if it's written in pascal (is it? I remember reading something like that), just fore pure learning... (i don't know any C languages to program unfortunately) We can't distribute the code except to the small group doing the port. But even so, I would encourage you to A) learn enough C to read it, it's a very common language and useful to know and B) not use Tyrian as a reference anyways--Jason's a fine coder but he clearly didn't write Tyrian with the expectation that anyone else would look at it. Furthermore, the trickiest bits of a game--the timing, main game loop, graphics, etc.--wouldn't be of any help to you, because Tyrian uses a lot of assembly and direct hardware access. you guys are doing more than just open scource right? I mean, I'm kinda expecting a remake with the same (maybe some new) graphics We're porting the program itself. It will use the original graphics and other data files (so yes, you'll need a copy of Tyrian to run the port). Once the port is finished, we'll be cleaning it up and expanding it to make it easy for people to create new graphics, weapons, episodes, etc. I'd prefer a BSD-ish license so this could be used as a base for fanmade propietary works. Why, so noone would play it? I don't think you'd get anyone to pay for a game using a ported Tyrian engine, and you'd need to replace all or most of the data files (a non-trivial amount of stuff) because, while the code is GPL, the data is not. That said, you could make a semi-proprietary version if you made your own data files, because you'd own the rights to the artwork and such.

Since you gods among men are porting the original Pascal to C and releasing that new code under (an assumed) GPL license, what does that mean for the graphics? According to Wikipedia the original graphics have also been released as "Open Source" but I got the impression from an earlier post that they would not be.

Dan's post appears to make the images nearly public domain... so yes, we could package those with OpenTyrian.

Would that be true for the music/sound effects as well?
