has anyone thought of modding the sidekicks, the ones that move such as the cherry companion, and changing them into a ship like the one the player is playing as, the player could customize his/her wingman and the wingman would be a 'smart' side kick, seeking out targets and protecting the player from danger? anyways, you guys have any ideas on how I would go about this?

The element of protecting the wingman would be (at least, in my perspective), a burden, escorting it along the way to make sure you don't lose hundreds of thousands of Credits worth by having it blown up. If the wingman were invincible, then the player could allow the wingman to attack bosses while providing cover fire in the background, thus notching down difficulty.

mayhaps the wingman can be destroyed, but restored between missions. as for the bosses, maybe just have the wingman disengage for them.

It's a interesting idea, though the AI implementation would have to be varied to adjust to the difficulty, to respond to the player when it needs to, to fight appropriately, and then fly off between boss fights.
I think it'd be interesting to arm the ship as you would your own, with a minishop containing items dedicated to it. To prevent the wingman from doing all the work, maybe the weapons/armor/upgrades could be pricey to ensure the player has at least a good bit of experience with the game rather than hiding behind the wingman.

Can't really be done with the current engine though. Sidekicks are basically just weapons that can orbit around you, attach to the side, or follow your last positions.
