Hi guys. I'm wondering if it's possible to edit boss stats in tyrian yet? It's no secret that lots of the bosses are way underpowered, and it would be nice to do some balanceing.

That boss in assassin just has cool music... It doesn't deserve it, at the rate it dies quickly XD

Well, first off try playing at a respectable difficulty level if you aren't already. ;-) Failing that - bosses that already start with a full hp bar already start with the full 255 hp they can have - there isn't space to set it higher, that's the maxhp any single enemy unit can have (it's a pretty respectable amount on Suicide+.) You'll notice there are a rare few that start with only a partial bar, but really rare, I can't remember which off-hand. So just giving bosses more hp directly is, in most cases, not possible. This leaves your options as things like giving them better weapons, faster movement/firing, defensive mechanisms such as invulnerable units that get in the way of your shots, or more segments like DREAD-NOT. All of this can be done, but it's not something a novice could hope to accomplish really. For now, you need a background in hacking including a knowledge of hexadecimal, the right tools, and a good grounding in Tyrian hacking in general to do it well IMO. See my Camanis2 boss for some examples - vulnerable spots only on-screen fairly briefly (I could make it even more brief if I wanted but I didn't want him to be stupidly hard on LOTG,) palette effects to make it a little harder to see, lots of shooting. Overall, considerably harder than the original Camanis boss, yes? It's also possible to just force the difficulty level higher than normal (2-player does this inherently (+2 I believe), individual levels can also do it at will, there are a few that already do,) even above LOTG, but it will overflow at some point, and this makes EVERYTHING harder, not just bosses.

Cool, I don't have the experiance yet, but I'm doing CS at college, maybe I'll have enough experiance in my second or third year...
It would be nice to rebalance the bosses though, IMHO it's about the only flaw in the entire game.

They usually don't teach hex these days I think, so you'll probably need to find that elsewhere anyways. Should be some good tutorials on the net if you google for them, perhaps. That and a solid understanding of basic programming techniques (ideally in C, for a variety of reasons) and you're well on your way at least to being able to hack old games like Tyrian. Once you have those, you can probably pick up the rest just hanging out on #tyrian.
