I'd go with Ogre3D, since it's opensource and exactly because it's only a 3D engine. The rest can be coded yourself easily enough.
(Also, not at all, Lua is wdely used, even in commercial PC games, but most of the time it's behind the scenes and you don't notice it.)

Yep, even Photoshop and World of Warcraft use Lua. It's a great scripting language.

How about UDK? Would it be possible to use it to remake Tyrian? We could use Blender to make the 3D models?
